 Frequently Asked Questions

TOP 8 QUESTIONS ASKED PRIOR TO THE FIRST SESSION
How much will it cost?

This depends on whether or not insurance is going to be used.  If an individual's policy has a high deductible to meet, the first session can range from $95-$75 depending on your insurance carrier.  If a client plans to pay out of pocket, then my fee is $85/hour. I do not have a sliding scale. Credit cards accepted: VISA, Master Card, Discover and American Express.

Is my employer or family able to know what's said?

No one can learn about what is said during a counseling session, because this is protected medical information.  I may ask for authorization to speak with your Primary Care Physcian (PCP) or Psychiatrist.

How many sessions will it take?

This often depends on the presenting issue of the client. If the problem is severe, i.e. trauma, depression, or anxiety, then the length of the time is dependent upon the client 's ability to lean into the discomfort of the problem. If the problem is situational or mild, then I often offer the client 7 sessions for completion of treatment.

How long will a session last?

The length of a session is 45 to 60 minutes.  If EMDR is done during the session then the session may be 90 minutes long.

Is there paperwork to do prior to the first session?

Yes you will need to arrive fifteen minutes early for your first session to complete your intake form and to read and sign the guidelines for counseling.  Both forms are located on clipboards in my waiting room.

What are my rights as a client?

As a client, you are free to ask for a referral if we aren't the appropriate fit. As a client you may express dissatisfaction with me. Ifthe problem can't be resolved, then I will refer you to an appropriate therapist so you may receive the needed help.  If I speak of referring a client to another therapist, then I am not the best therapist to help the client. I believe the main goal of counseling is to get out of counseling.

What happens in the first session?

I generally structure the first session by doing a family tree.  My reasoning is to learn your history and understand your view of the world.  We often learn how to deal with the world from our families so I gain a better appreciation and understanding of you.

When are your office hours?

I'm in the office Monday through Thursday with appointments scheduled beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at 6 p.m.
